What is the urinary system?
The urinary system is a vital system that maintains the body's internal balance by filtering harmful waste and excess water and excreting them as urine. This system mainly consists of the kidneys, bladder and ureters.
What is urinary system ultrasound?
Urinary system ultrasound is an ultrasound examination performed to visualize the kidneys, urinary tract and bladder and to detect abnormalities. In men, the prostate gland is also evaluated during this examination. The structure, size and internal features of the kidneys are assessed using high-frequency sound waves, and the urinary tract and bladder are checked for pathology. In men, the size of the prostate gland is measured and its internal structure is evaluated.
Why is urinary system ultrasound performed?
Urinary system US (ultrasonography) is a harmless and painless imaging method in which the kidneys, bladder and urinary tract are examined using sound waves. This examination is mainly performed to diagnose structural problems such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections and masses or cysts.
Is there radiation in urinary system ultrasound?
Ultrasound examinations use high-frequency sound waves. It contains no radiation.
Can urinary system ultrasound be performed at any age?
As urinary system ultrasound does not use X-rays or other types of radiation, it is a safe imaging method for individuals of any age.
Is any preparation required for urinary system ultrasound?
In urinary system ultrasound, the bladder needs to be full so that it can be seen well. Therefore, the patient is usually advised to drink water and fill the bladder 1–2 hours before the procedure.
How is urinary system ultrasound performed?
The patient is prepared so that the abdomen and the sides of the abdomen are exposed. The examination usually begins with the patient lying on their back on the examination table. For better imaging, the patient may be asked to turn to the right and left when needed. Ultrasound gel is applied.
How many minutes does urinary system ultrasound take?
Urinary system ultrasound usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes.
Is urinary system ultrasound a painful examination?
Urinary system ultrasound is not a painful examination.
Does urinary system ultrasound have any side effects or harm?
This examination has no side effects or harm. Ultrasound works using high-frequency sound waves and contains no radiation. Therefore it is a safe imaging method.
Can I continue my daily life after having this examination?
Immediately after the examination, patients can continue with their work and daily activities. There is no restriction or rest period. The gel used during the examination is water-based and can be easily cleaned off.
What should be done after urinary system ultrasound?
After this examination you can return to your normal daily activities immediately. There is no restriction on going to work, exercising or continuing other routine activities.
