What is hip dislocation?
Hip dislocation in babies (Developmental Hip Dysplasia) is the condition in which the head of the thigh bone does not fully sit in its socket in the hip or slips out of the socket. This problem arises from a shallow hip socket or laxity of the ligaments holding the joint.
What is hip dislocation (developmental hip dysplasia) screening?
Hip dislocation screening is a test performed to diagnose hip dislocation early in babies. The screening is usually done with a physical examination and a hip ultrasound. Ultrasound provides detailed imaging of the hip joint and shows whether there is any dislocation or developmental problem.
Why is hip dislocation (developmental hip dysplasia) screening important?
Hip dislocation is a treatable condition when diagnosed early. If not treated during infancy, it can lead to walking difficulties, pain and permanent joint damage in later years. With early diagnosis, treatment may be possible with simple interventions without the need for surgery. Permanent disabilities can be prevented with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
What are the signs and symptoms of developmental hip dysplasia?
The signs and symptoms of developmental hip dysplasia may vary according to the severity of the condition. The condition may go unnoticed by the family until the baby starts to walk, and treatment may be delayed. Therefore it is very important to screen every baby for hip dislocation at the appropriate time. Signs and symptoms such as delay in sitting, crawling or walking, limping, a difference in length between the two legs, muscle problems due to less use of the affected side, pain and limited movement may be seen.
Who is developmental hip dysplasia screening performed on?
Every newborn baby should be screened for developmental hip dysplasia (hip dislocation).
When should hip dislocation (developmental hip dysplasia) screening be done?
For the ultrasound examination, it is performed, if possible, at 6–8 weeks.

The ultrasound imaging method works using high-frequency sound waves, and these sound waves contain no radiation.

Is any preparation needed before this ultrasound examination?
No preparation is needed for a hip ultrasound. It makes the examination easier if the baby is well-rested, fed and calm.
How is infant hip ultrasound performed?
For this examination the baby is laid on the couch. The baby is positioned so that the hip to be examined is on top and the hip and knee are slightly bent. A little warmed gel is applied to a suitable ultrasound probe, which is then moved over the area of the hip joint.
How many minutes does this examination take?
Infant hip ultrasound usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes.
Is the ultrasound performed for developmental hip dysplasia (hip dislocation) screening a painful examination?
No, this examination is not painful.
Does this examination have any side effects or harm?
Hip ultrasound is a safe procedure with no side effects or harm. Sound waves also have no known side effects or harm.
If needed, does repeating this ultrasound harm the baby?
In some babies, the hip ultrasound may need to be repeated after a while. Repeating the hip ultrasound causes no harm to the baby.
Does the gel used harm the baby?
Ultrasound gels are water-based, non-toxic and hygienic. They can be easily cleaned off the skin and generally do not cause any side effects.
What should be done after having this examination?
After having a hip ultrasound you can continue with your baby's daily routine.
