What is detailed pregnancy ultrasonography and detailed ultrasound?
Detailed pregnancy ultrasonography (detailed fetal ultrasound) is a special imaging procedure that closely examines the organs and development of the baby in the womb and is usually performed between weeks 18 and 23.
Why is detailed pregnancy ultrasonography performed?
The purposes of this ultrasound are:
- To evaluate in detail the baby's organs such as the brain, face, spine, heart, lungs, stomach, kidneys, bladder and intestines.
- To examine the development of the arms, legs, hands and feet.
- To investigate for signs of a congenital anomaly in the heart.
- To detect certain congenital anomalies such as an open spine (spina bifida).
- To evaluate facial anomalies such as cleft lip and palate.
- To check whether the baby's growth is appropriate for the gestational week.
- To evaluate the location and structure of the placenta.
- To measure the amount of amniotic fluid (the baby's water).
- To obtain information about the risk of preterm birth by evaluating the cervical length (when needed).
Which conditions can detailed pregnancy ultrasonography show?
Detailed ultrasound can show many structural anomalies. For example:
- Heart anomalies
- Brain and spinal cord anomalies
- Kidney and urinary tract problems
- Skeletal system anomalies
- Abdominal wall openings
- Cleft lip and palate
However, it cannot show every disease or genetic disorder. For example, some chromosomal diseases or very small structural disorders may not be noticed with ultrasound. Therefore, a normal detailed ultrasound result does not guarantee that the baby is 100% healthy in terms of all diseases.
Who is detailed pregnancy ultrasonography performed on?
Today it is recommended for all pregnant women. Even if the mother's age is young or advanced, and even if the pregnancy appears low-risk, having a detailed ultrasound is an important part of standard prenatal follow-up.
How long does detailed pregnancy ultrasonography take?
It usually takes 45 minutes.
If the baby's position is not suitable, it may take a little longer or may need to be repeated at a different time.
Does detailed pregnancy ultrasonography harm the mother or the baby?
No. Ultrasound contains no radiation, and to date there is no reliable evidence that pregnancy ultrasounds performed appropriately harm the mother or the baby.
Should I be fasting or full during the procedure?
It does not matter whether the mother is fasting or full for a detailed pregnancy ultrasound. You can be comfortable.

What is 4D color ultrasound?
4D color pregnancy ultrasound is an advanced ultrasound method that shows real-time, moving images of the baby in the womb. The baby's movements and behaviors can be evaluated with 4D ultrasound.
What makes 4D color ultrasound so unique?
We have all seen traditional, ordinary 2D ultrasounds. 2D ultrasounds are black-and-white still images of our babies. 3D ultrasounds are pictures with depth, taking things a step further by letting you see your baby's features more closely. What is 4D color ultrasound and for what purpose is it performed?
It is possible to closely watch all of the baby's movements — thumb sucking, stretching the legs, smiling, frowning, opening and closing the eyes — with 4D ultrasound.
With the 4D color ultrasound device, an early diagnosis of the sex, cleft lip, cleft palate, missing fingers and disorders originating from the brain and spinal cord can be made at a very early stage. It is possible to see the baby's face and body structure in more detail, to help evaluate some congenital anomalies, and to observe the baby's movements.
When is 4D color ultrasound performed?
The clearest images are usually obtained between weeks 24–32 of pregnancy. Weeks 26–30 in particular are often the most suitable period for seeing the baby's face.
Is 4D color ultrasound harmful?
To date, there is no reliable evidence that ultrasounds performed for medical necessity and for appropriate durations are harmful to the mother or the baby. However, unnecessarily long scans performed solely for keepsake purposes are not recommended.
