What is renal color Doppler ultrasound?
Renal color Doppler ultrasound is an imaging method used to evaluate the blood flow and vascular structures of the kidneys. This examination allows assessment of the structure, and the speed and direction of blood flow, of the main renal artery and vein and of the blood vessels within the kidney.
Color Doppler technology visualizes the direction and speed of blood flow within the vessels in color. In addition, spectral Doppler technology allows analysis of the blood flowing within the vessels. While color Doppler ultrasound represents blood flow visually, spectral Doppler shows this flow graphically and allows the speed and direction of the flow to be analyzed in detail.
Why is renal color Doppler ultrasound performed?
Renal color Doppler ultrasound is an imaging method performed to evaluate the blood flow and vascular structures of the kidneys. It is used to diagnose and monitor some kidney diseases, to evaluate kidney function, and for treatment planning or follow-up.
Narrowing of the main renal artery is called renal artery stenosis. Renal artery stenosis can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure and kidney failure. Renal color Doppler ultrasound is usually the first imaging method used to determine whether there is narrowing in the renal arteries.
In patients diagnosed with high blood pressure (hypertension), renal color Doppler examination is used to evaluate whether the high blood pressure is of renal origin.
Is there radiation in renal color Doppler ultrasound?
This imaging contains no radiation.
Can renal color Doppler ultrasound be performed at any age?
It can be safely performed at any age, in both children and adults.
Is any preparation required for this examination?
Before renal color Doppler ultrasound, 6–8 hours of fasting is required to reduce gas formation in the abdomen and to improve image quality.
Smoking or chewing gum causes air to be swallowed and therefore negatively affects the quality of the examination. In addition, obesity, excessive gas in the intestines, anatomical variations, difficulty holding the breath and cardiac rhythm disorders are conditions that make the assessment more difficult. The patient may take their regular medications with a little water.
How is renal color Doppler ultrasound performed?
During renal color Doppler ultrasound, while the patient is in the supine position, ultrasound gel is applied to the middle of the abdomen and to the kidney locations on both sides, and the ultrasound probe that transmits high-frequency sound waves is moved over the abdominal skin. Because the vessels also move during breathing, the patient is asked to hold their breath from time to time so that a healthy measurement can be made.
The assessment begins with ultrasound, and first the size, location and internal structure of the kidneys and whether there is dilatation in the urinary tract are evaluated. The direction and speed of flow are measured from the vascular structures shown on the screen, coded red or blue according to the direction of flow. The examination takes about 20–30 minutes.
After the procedure is completed, the gel on the abdomen is cleaned off. The radiologist presents the images obtained and the Doppler data in a detailed report.
