Color Doppler Ultrasound
A special type of ultrasound that shows the direction, velocity and possible blockages of blood flow in vessels through color mapping.
Color Doppler ultrasonography is an examination that, in addition to standard ultrasound, reveals blood flow inside vessels as colored images. With this method, conditions such as narrowing, blockage, clots or insufficiency in arteries and veins can be evaluated. The procedure involves no radiation, is painless and non-invasive.
When is this procedure needed?
- For varicose veins, swelling, pain in the legs, or suspicion of deep vein thrombosis (clot)
- For evaluation of neck vessels (carotid) and atherosclerosis screening
- For examining blood flow to the thyroid, kidneys or other organs
- For monitoring blood flow to the baby during pregnancy (umbilical Doppler)
How to prepare

- Abdominal vesselsFasting for 6–8 hours may be requested for examination of abdominal vessels.
- ClothingWear comfortable clothes that allow easy access to the area being examined.
- Smoking and caffeineYou may be advised to avoid smoking and caffeine before vascular exams.
How the process works
Gel is applied to the area being examined and the probe is moved over the skin to assess blood flow in vessels, displayed in color and audio (Doppler signal). The procedure is painless and usually takes 15–30 minutes depending on the area examined. At the end of the examination, the gel is cleaned off and your physician reports the findings.
